Waste

Our waste footprintOur strategy is to minimise the effect of our operational projects on the environment, through the active involvement and close liaison with all our stakeholders, but particularly our clients who are responsible for the generation of waste on our projects.

Due to changes in our investment profile we have revised our boundary criteria for reporting purposes. The criteria includes all UK projects where John Laing provide operational management and/or John Laing Integrated Services provide facilities management services.

John Laing proactively and systematically gathers and analyses waste data from its operational projects, to facilitate continual improvement. Our aim is to produce less waste and increase recycling rates throughout the business on an incremental basis, thus minimising the volume sent to landfill. By adopting a sustainable approach, John Laing aspires to protect and enhance the environment, whilst reducing costs associated with service provision.

Our waste objectives are to:

  • Further the minimisation of waste we produce
  • Improve waste record keeping systems at appropriate operational sites
  • Enhance our metrics for the measurement of waste
  • Expand our strategies for the management of waste
  • Consider ways in which waste can be utilised as a resource

Although the percentage of waste diverted from landfill would appear to be constant around 24% there is a significant variance between the operational sectors.

Over the period Quarter 1 – Quarter 3, 2011 our head office, Allington House generated in the region of 58 tonnes of waste, including confidential waste. 86% of the waste was recycled and the remaining 14% diverted to a waste to energy plant.
