International Markets

John Laing has been active in the international PPP market for over 30 years.  Our first overseas investment was in the Europistas road project in Spain, a real-toll project, in 1969.  Following the successful growth of our UK PPP business in the 1990s, John Laing re-entered the international PPP market, and has secured investments in Norway, Finland and Poland in recent years.  In addition, the group is actively bidding for new projects in a number of other countries in Europe, as well as Singapore, the US and Canada.

John Laing’s international activities to date have been focused on the roads’ sector, but we are now broadening this into our other main areas, including social infrastructure, waste and rail PPP.  All of the international activities are managed by the John Laing Infrastructure division.

Our international team has a wealth of skills and experience, including commercial, financial and technical, as well as language skills in a range of different country markets.  We have established offices in Canada and the Czech Republic, to allow us to engage more strongly in those markets and are planning to open an US office during 2008.

International Markets represent a key area for John Laing’s future growth, and we will continue to engage in markets which can provide a significant pipeline of opportunities, where a strong local contractor partner can be secured, and where investment conditions are acceptable.  Where these conditions are met, we are confident that our skills can be successfully applied.
